Help for Overweight Kids

More and more today’s children are becoming overweight. Much of this has to do with our everyday lifestyles. Our children are very often sat in front of the television, robbing them of their imaginations and their adolescent energy.

Instead of going with the rest of society, we need to teach our children healthy habits.
First of all, we need to reinforce what foods are nutritious and which ones are not. Having the whole family practice healthy habits will keep our children in step with a healthy routine.
We also need to make sure our kids are active. We also need to make sure they have the opportunity to be active. Set a certain amount of time for video games and television so they are not used too much. It is also wise to set a specific time for the whole family to exercise together! This way children do not feel they are being picked on or forced to do a task.

What about children that are already overweight?
As adults if we want to lose weight we need to be concerned with the amount of calories we consume. With children this is not the case. If your child is overweight, you need to simply begin giving them more healthy snacks and meals.

With children the most effective ways to help them achieve their
weight loss goal are by cutting down portion sizes, limiting snack times, and choosing healthier foods. Chances are that if you begin eating more healthy at home, your children will choose more wisely at school and their friends home.

Monitor your child’s activity. Get them to play with the dog, play outside with a friend, every little bit adds up. Express to them that being healthy is the key to a better life.

Keep in mind that your child looks up to you more than anyone else. Be sure to practice nutritious eating and active exercise yourself too. It will be much easier for your child to stay with a healthy routine when everyone in the household participates.

Be sure to let your child know you love them no matter what. More often than not, an overweight child will feel unloved and can eventually be depressed. If you begin to notice these things, take your child to a counselor or doctor. Self-esteem needs to be built up in words and actions from you!

It begins with family. Especially for children there is no greater bond than family and their support.

Once your child knows that you are there for them every step of the way, you will see a change in their daily routine. Then they will be on their way to success!
