Why do I have muscle soreness?

We all had them, but what do we really know about them? Let's say you are overweight and want to loose some weight. You get your hand on one of those great weight loss programs, start reading and you get so pumped up, that you decide to cut-off your diet and to work out. That great!
The next day your out in the park well equiped for sweating and weight loss. This is when you forget that it has been a long time since you last exercised and that you have extra pounds that you need to carry with you around the park. Disregarding this obvious observation you go and jog for 20 minutes and then fall onto a bench and rest for 30 minutes with a terrible muscle soreness.
Now, let me explain what just happened. Your body has excess weight therefore it is harder to jog. Your muscles have atrophied since the last time you exercised so they are in bad shape. The blood circulation and breathing is also impaired by the extra weight.
This all add up to the following: the muscle needs energy all the time(yes, even when standing) and this energy comes from glucose(sugar). The process of transforming it into energy is oxygen dependent. See where I'm going? Your poor breathing technique and weak blood circulation lead to oxygen deficiency in the muscle. This is just one part of the problem, because the muscle is prepared for this, it goes on a metabolic pathway of transforming glucose into lactic acid. This yields more than 10 times less energy but keeps you going the extra mile you wanted.
So when you sit down, the lactic acid that accumulated now sits there and waits to be catabolised. If you would now get up and just walk another 15 minutes and concentrating on correct breathing then more oxygen would go to the muscle and help
lactic acid oxidation. Of course you could get even better results by eating a bar of chocolate, but remember what you promised last night while reading that weight loss program!?
