What comes to mind when you say the words “weight training”. To most people their
first thought is bodybuilding and gigantic muscles; this is what is known as a
media myth or a stereotype. Weight training plays an integral part for burning
fat, muscle tone, overall health, and physique. Let’s break a myth right here
right now; you do not get huge by lifting weights! The only way to build big bodybuilder
bodies is if you are eating excess calories – a lot of calories. The
average woman for example, if she ate the calories and lifted the weights; she
is not predisposed to having physically large muscles. Then you must consider that
many bodybuilders are using steroids, supplements, and pills… What about the
female bodybuilders with the big muscles? Some of them are on large quantities
of male hormones. The point is if you fear getting big from a typical weight
training routine you have nothing to worry about because it’s unlikely to happen. How Does Weight Training Cause Fat Loss? Most people when choosing to lose weight simply change their diet. Some will combine the change of diet with aerobic exercise. What many people don’t know is that weight training can also contribute to fat loss. It’s a little known fact that muscle tissue burns fat, thus the act of increasing your muscles, increases the rate at which your body can metabolize energy; this ultimately allows the body to then burn fat. Simple right? WRONG! Just lifting a few weights by themselves will not constitute fat loss. It takes the combination of the right diet, exercise, and weight training to give you the best opportunity of achieving your weight loss goals. Simple Weight Training One myth that we are going to bust right now is that weight training does not mean you have to go out and join a gym because lets face it, memberships are expensive and some of us just don’t have the time. Weight training can be done from the privacy of your own home by purchasing a few barbells and dumbbells and a weight bench; or purchasing a home gym system for example Bowflex. If you decide on a more in depth workout with the Bowflex you will be more open to perform a far more diverse range of exercises. Aim to do your weight training 2-3 times per week. Any more than that is not recommended for a beginner. There are numbers of e-books available describing various weight routines. One I would suggest is a book written by Tom Veto titled Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. His program is all about diet and exercise for fat loss. I Want a Wash Board Stomach Stay up one night around midnight-1 am – why you ask? Too watch infomercials that will try and sell you the latest abdominal machine. I honestly have to say I have watched a few of these and the second they show the viewer how it works I burst into laughter, I mean some of these are utterly ridiculous! With a single machine, it seems according to the advertiser that you turn into a muscle bound god (if you’re a man), or have a wonderfully sculpted and tanned body (if you’re a woman). I didn’t know an abdominal machine could give me amazing features and tan my body all at the same time! Does it seem too good to be true? That’s because it is. Performing abdominal exercises will strengthen your stomach muscles, and maybe build some definition but not a lot. What does this matter? Your stomach is covered in fat so how is anyone going to see your fabulous six pack. Do not be fooled, those fitness models use more than just the machine they are being paid to advertise to build their bodies. Abdominal machines will not strengthen your thighs, give you large biceps, or burn all your belly fat. However, increased lean muscle mass – leading to a fat burning metabolism, healthy eating, aerobic exercise, and a variety of weight training will all help you lose weight. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying every abdominal machine advertised isn’t going to work. There are plenty of abdominal machines that will help you work your stomach without straining your back or neck. But please do not think that just because you purchase that abdominal machine you will become a fitness model.
